Challenges and Opportunities of Globalization
Arent Fox, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, is hosting an international trade and investment conference. Myles Getlan, Dave Hamill, Kay Georgi and Matt Nolan of Arent Fox’s international trade group are chairing the four speaker panels.
Home to six Fortune 500 companies, more than 70 companies with over $1 billion in sales, and local start-ups receiving
more than $2 billion in venture capital since 2000, Pittsburgh is confronting the challenges of globalization head on. But with progress comes more challenges. Intense import competition is tightening markets in the United States. Burdensome, non-transparent regulations and procedures make it difficult for companies of all sizes to access new foreign markets. And in the wake of September 11th and numerous corporate scandals, increasingly complex and still evolving U.S. regulations in the areas of customs, anti-corruption, export controls and economic sanctions compel attention to internal company controls.
In this one-day conference, legal and business representatives from Pittsburgh companies such as Alcoa Inc., Bayer,
H.J. Heinz Company, U.S. Steel, and Westinghouse will offer practical tips on how to comply and compete in the global
marketplace. Topics include:
- Where to focus resources to ensure import and export compliance
- How to identify “red flags” that can lead to an enforcement action in the areas of anti-corruption, export controls, economic sanctions, and customs
- How companies can protect and expand their markets in the U.S. and abroad
- Key considerations in investing in a foreign country
Don’t miss this timely and topical event geared to Pittsburgh companies of all sizes and industries!
