Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Minimizing Risk and Defining New Strategies in Global Anti-Corruption

Arent Fox LLP will be joining with the International Quality & Productivity Center (IQPC) and other leading law firms and businesses to  hold the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Minimizing Risk and Defining New Strategies in Global Anti-Corruption Conference in Washington, DC, on September 22-23, 2009.

The annual number of FCPA enforcement actions has increased dramatically over the last several years. Foreign anti-corruption authorities have also stepped up enforcement actions and working increasingly closer with the United States government pursuing anti-corruption investigations. As the risks keep spreading to more and more industries, no American company can even remotely afford the consequences of non-compliance. Those consequences have now become quite severe: heavy civil and criminal penalties for both individuals and corporations; large profit losses and, ever more, the imposition of expensive independent monitors on companies who break the rules.

That is why Arent Fox, IQPC and other major businesses and professional organizations are bringing together some of the leading figures in FCPA, including government officials, general counsel, outside counsel, and consultants, to examine and explain how companies can plan to meet the challenges and compliance requirements posed by FCPA.

On Day 1 of the Conference, Baruch Weiss will serve as moderator of the panel “Preparing For And Conducting Both Internal And Global Investigations For Corruption.” Joining Baruch on the panel will be:

    Mark F. Mendelsohn
Deputy Chief, Fraud Section, Criminal Division
    US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

    Gary E. Giampetuzzi
Assistant General Counsel and Deputy Compliance Officer, International Investigations and Programs
    PFIZER INC.

On Day 2, Arent Fox partner Michael Burton will participate in the panel “Knowing Exactly Where To Draw The Line: The Differences Between Permissible Gifts, Entertainment And Travel For Foreign Officials-And Bribes.” Michael's fellow panelists will be:

    Patrick J. Garver
Executive Vice President and General Counsel
    BARRICK GOLD CORPORATION
