Anthony Lupo Discusses the Future of IP Regulatory Policy
Intellectual Property partner Anthony Lupo was quoted in a Law360 article on the intellectual property issues President Barack Obama will most likely focus on during his second term.
Law360 reported that regulators will likely prioritize “monitoring enforcement of US intellectual property rights around the world and taking a position on possible legislation to crack down on online piracy.”
Mr. Lupo noted the president can play a significant role ensuring that other countries protect US intellectual property rights. “IP is America’s number one export,” said Mr. Lupo, “and once you really recognize that, it should be given the same respect as any other major export so U.S. companies are in a position to exploit their IP around the world.”
Mr. Lupo added that the administration should increase its use of trade sanctions against countries that don’t protect intellectual property rights. “Most countries have put in place respectable IP regimes on paper, but the problem is getting enforcement in local courts,” Mr. Lupo said. “Getting protection in foreign countries has met with a lot of resistance.”
