Arent Fox senior government relations director Amy Demske was quoted in the July 4, 2012, edition of Inside Health Reform discussing the impact of the US Supreme Court’s health care decision on efforts to expand Medicaid.

In an article titled, “Providers Weigh Benefits of ACA Medicaid Expansion versus Boosted Exchanges,” Inside Health Reform reports:

“Stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum agree that the Supreme Court’s Medicaid decision opens up a lot of questions that no one was focusing on prior to the ruling. … Amy Demske, senior government relations director for Arent Fox says it is likely that hospitals facing DSH cuts (referencing the Disproportionate Share Hospital Payment program that pays for patients without insurance for whom hospitals provide uncompensated care) will pressure state legislators to take up the Medicaid expansion. … White House officials also said they are expecting providers to push states toward accepting the Medicaid expansion, speaking following the Supreme Court’s ruling. … Demske also suggests that federal subsidies towards purchasing insurance on the exchange would not be sufficient to cover the cost of private insurance for many low income people. … Until the exchanges role out in 2014 and the premium costs are known, it would be hard to know if the population in question could afford insurance even with a subsidy.”
