DC firm grows from nine to 60 lawyers in LA, looks to SF

LOS ANGELES - Arent Fox LLP has built a 60-lawyer office in Los Angeles in five years without promising huge compensation packages or frequenting the services of headhunters.

Lawyers inside and outside the firm give much of the credit to Robert C. O'Brien, the office's charismatic, uber-tweeting managing partner who has tapped his vast network of friends for new talent.

O'Brien knows the people he's hiring and says he has a deep understanding of their business-generating potential. He also engenders a loyalty that, thus far, has kept lawyers from looking to move elsewhere, his colleagues and friends say.
