Phil English Unpacks TPP Deal’s 18,000 Tax Cuts for Bloomberg

On October 8, Bloomberg Politics broke down “How the White House Slices 18,000 Tax Cuts From Trade Deal” following the controversial 12-nation deal reached earlier that week.

As part of President Obama’s pitch to Congress, the administration totaled all the tariffs that would be cut between the US and its TPP partners should the deal pass. Government Relations co-chair Phil English discussed the tallied up talking point and the deal’s chances in Congress.

Mr. English, as Bloomberg reported, is skeptical. According to Mr. English, while the 18,000 figure may be accurate, it’s not going to win over political moderates that the administration needs to ratify the deal.

“I want to give them an A for effort, but as somebody who pitched a trade position to a very blue collar district, the argument of consumer benefits, which is essentially what they are making, is never one that has resonated,” said Mr. English. “This is going to be a very difficult sale.”
