LOS ANGELES — Daily Journal, California’s leading legal publication, has named Arent Fox partner Mette Kurth one of the Top Women Lawyers in California.

“Armed with a degree in economics, Kurth said that she approaches her field with an ‘eye toward business issues,’” writes Daily Journal. “Kurth said she tries to find cooperative types of solutions to resolve problems. ‘It brings the best results for everyone,’ Kurth said. ‘It’s more of a business minded way to go about it. You’re dealing with businesses that need to pay payroll tomorrow, and they are under pressure to find solutions now.’”

In selecting Mette as one of California’s top women lawyers, Daily Journal noted Mette’s work on behalf of The Walking Company, a national footwear retail chain.

“In one of her recent cases, Kurth worked with the debtor to craft a successful plan to help the Walking Co. reorganize – avoiding a sale or liquidation – and enabling it to keep all of its stores intact, continue business, and pay its lender and, substantially, all of its unsecured creditors 100 percent of the pre-petition claims,” Daily Journal wrote. In Re The Walking Co., 9:09-bk-15138-RR, (Bankr. C.D. Cal.).

Earlier this year, Mette and Arent Fox were named a winner of The M&A Advisor’s 2011 Turnaround Award for the firm’s work in helping The Walking Company successfully emerge from bankruptcy. Arent Fox earned top honors in the “Chapter 11 Reorganization of the Year” (Lower Middle Market) awards category.

Robert C. O’Brien, managing partner of Arent Fox’s Los Angeles office, said “This is well-deserved recognition for Mette. Her business-oriented methods provide innovative and effective solutions to extraordinarily complex matters for our clients.”
