John Kingery Joins Arent Fox International Trade Practice

    Washington, DC—December 5, 2007—Arent Fox is proud to announce that John Kingery has joined the firm’s international trade group as a partner in the Washington, DC office. Kingery has extensive experience in all sectors of international trade, including dispute settlement, intellectual property rights, taxation, agriculture, trade remedies, government procurement and tariffs. The addition of Kingery to Arent Fox bolsters an already formidable and globally recognized international trade practice.

    Prior to joining Arent Fox – while working with an international trade and customs law firm in Washington, DC – Kingery represented countries in several World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes as well as provided advice to the governments of Korea and Japan and other corporate and government clients on various WTO matters. He has been the legal advisor to the Korean Embassy and Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade throughout the negotiations on a Korea-US Free-Trade Agreement.

    From 1997 to 2002, before entering private practice, Kingery served as senior legal advisor for the WTO, supervising other legal officers and advising dispute settlement panels on a variety of trade-related matters. He was also a legal advisor to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) and the Special Session of the DSB working to revise the WTO dispute settlement system.

    Prior to joining the WTO, Kingery spent nine years with United Technologies Corporation (UTC) as senior counsel with responsibility for trade and competition issues. He worked extensively on trade and competition issues related to various sectors of UTC’s business, including the aerospace, automotive and building systems sectors. Kingery helped lead the US aerospace industry successfully through the conclusion of the Uruguay Round negotiations.

    Kingery previously was an associate general counsel at the Office of the US Trade Representative, where he worked on many GATT dispute settlement cases and advised on a broad range of issues. He was also an attorney-advisor at the International Trade Commission, where he advised the commission on various investigations relating to imports and represented the ITC in litigation before the Court of International Trade and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

    Kingery obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. He was an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School, where he taught a course in international dispute settlement and has been a guest lecturer in international trade courses at the University of Connecticut Law School and Georgetown Law School.
