His income tax practice includes both planning and controversy work. John joined Arent Fox following graduation from law school; he became a partner in 1984, and of counsel in 2004. Client Work The planning portion of John’s tax practice includes advising businesses (whether corporations, partnerships, or proprietorships) and non-profit organizations on such matters as formation, public or private offerings of debt (including tax-exempt debt) or equity, mergers, acquisitions, liquidations, split-ups, day-to-day transactions, renegotiation of debt, and bankruptcy. His work in this area also involves the US tax consequences to US entities investing outside of the United States and non-US entities investing in the United States. In the tax controversy portion of his practice, John represents clients before various offices and divisions of the Internal Revenue Service and before the courts. Previous Work John was employed in the tax department of a large national accounting firm before graduating from law school. Professional Activities From 1987 through 1992, John was a barrister member of the Inns of Court of the United States Tax Court. He has served on various committees of the ABA Tax Section. Publications, Presentations and Recognitions John is author of the current editions of the Tax Management Portfolios on the subjects of losses and bad debts: McCoy, 527-2nd “Tax Management Loss Deductions” and McCoy, 538-2nd “Tax Management Bad Debts.” Life Beyond the Law Before attending law school, John served in the US Peace Corps in Africa. He enjoys skiing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, and traveling the world to ski, dive, or hike.
