She represents a wide variety of clients in mediations, arbitrations, agency proceedings and state and federal court litigation. A focus of her practice is on the representation of clients in diverse and complex labor and employment law matters. This representation includes advising employers on compliance with federal and state employment laws, discipline and discharge decisions, handbook and policy development, and medical leave and disability issues. She defends employers against claims of discrimination, harassment and retaliation and a host of other employment-related claims. In addition, Karen has experience in a large number of complex commercial matters, including public accommodation and fair housing litigation, breach of contract, and trade secret law. Karen has worked with clients in numerous industries, including real estate, parking, hospitality, sports, television, and fashion and luxury goods. Previous Work Prior to joining Arent Fox, Karen worked for a boutique law firm in Washington, DC, working on both real estate and commercial litigation matters. From 2009-2010, Karen served as a law clerk for the Honorable Mary Ellen Barbera of the Court of Appeals of Maryland. Professional Activities Karen is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, Labor and Employment Law Section. Life Beyond the Law When not working, Karen enjoys running, traveling, and cheering on the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics. She lives with her husband, Stephen, a law professor at American University, Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC.
