Our attorneys have served as counsel to numerous professional teams and have advised a number of purchasers and sellers of professional franchises, events, and sports properties. We have significant experience in the acquisition, development and operation of arenas and stadiums. We have assisted our clients in financings relating to the acquisition of professional sports teams and the development of arenas and stadiums as well as the refinancing of existing venues through public and private means.

Arent Fox advises entities on both sides of sponsorship transactions and on major naming rights agreements. Our attorneys negotiate major media arrangements involving traditional broadcast, the Internet, and related media. Arent Fox attorneys also regularly deal with labor and employment issues, venue arrangements, and representation agreements with marketing agencies. Additionally, we have worked on Olympic sports matters, in the governance of tennis, in the management of professional franchises and with collegiate athletics, including with respect to collegiate conferences and bowl games. Arent Fox attorneys serve as arbitrators on numerous international and national panels and are routinely involved in various other types of sports litigation and dispute resolution matters.

Arent Fox's Sports practice focuses on the representation of sports teams, and owners and purchasers of sports franchises. Sources hail the team's experience in acquisition transactions, stadium financing and construction, sponsorship and naming rights work, and sports media and technology. The group represented the family of Abe Pollin in connection with the sale of all of its interests in the NBA's Washington Wizards and the Verizon Center to Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Sources say: "It's the individuals that make the firm. I was very satisfied with the work they did, and they keep non-lawyers pleased as well - that speaks to the great personality of the lawyers." Richard Brand chairs the Arent Fox Sports group, and maintains an active personal practice in representing both purchasers and sellers of sports franchises. He is also recognized for his experience in sports stadium transactions. Sources describe him as "not only a very tactical corporate lawyer, but someone who knows the sports business and the industry inside out."
