Van has counseled clients extensively on mergers, acquisitions, and other forms of business combinations, and has represented acquiring entities, as well as selling entities. A substantial portion of his practice has been dedicated to startup companies. He has been engaged in all aspects of their organization, fundraising, and contract preparation.

Van has litigated a wide range of cases in federal and state courts throughout the United States (and abroad). He is experienced in handling corporate and securities matters as well as real estate, construction, intellectual property, and trade secret violations. He has also acted as a private mediator, and testified as an expert witness in several matters relating to professional responsibility.

An Arent Fox partner since 1986, Van changed his status to counsel in February 2001, when he became president of the RLJ Companies, a diverse group of investment companies owned by Robert L. Johnson, the founder and CEO of Black Entertainment Television. In his capacity with The RLJ Companies, Van helps manage a portfolio of companies, including the holding company that owns the Charlotte Bobcats, the National Basketball Association franchise in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a real estate development company involved in the hospitality industry. Van also serves as General Counsel to the RLJ Companies.
