Jim’s practice is focused on preparing and prosecuting US and foreign patent applications, evaluating Intellectual Property (IP) portfolios and performing IP due diligence, carrying out patent landscaping and strategic IP management activities, drafting, and reviewing licensing agreements and advising clients on all IP related activities.

Prior to joining Arent Fox, Jim was a partner at a boutique IP firm. Jim was also a senior divisional patent counsel for Medtronic, Inc., a Fortune 500 medical device company, where he led the IP strategic patent landscaping activities to align IP development with long-and short-term business goals. Jim also has experience in crafting and interpreting IP licensing agreements. Additionally, prior to working for Medtronic, Inc., Jim was responsible for establishing the IP practice group in an office of a prominent general practice law firm.

Before entering the legal profession, Jim worked for eight years as an engineer for GE Medical Systems, GE Lighting and GE Aircraft Engines.

Jim is a member of American Intellectual Property Association, the IP Section of the American Bar Association and the Carolinas Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association.
