George V. Utlik is an associate in Arent Fox’s financial restructuring and bankruptcy group. George focuses his practice on all aspects of corporate reorganization, financial restructuring, liquidation, insolvency and bankruptcy proceedings under the Bankruptcy Code. George has extensive experience representing official committees of unsecured creditors, debtors and debtors in possession, secured lenders, indenture trustees and other parties in interest in chapter 11 bankruptcies, cross-border insolvencies, and out-of-court restructurings.

Client Work

George represents official committees of unsecured creditors, debtors and debtors in possession, secured creditors, indenture trustees, and other entities in bankruptcy reorganization and liquidation proceedings.  His recent matters have included:

  • Representation of creditors’ committees in high-profile bankruptcy proceedings in industries, including manufacturing, e-commerce, telecommunications, health care, and retail
  • Representation of an indenture trustee in Dynegy Holdings LLC and Freemont General Corporation
  • Representation of debtors and debtors in possession in Morgan Industries Corporation and Hunter Marine Corporation, Nomoto Investments, LLC, The Walking Company
  • Representation of commodity customers in the liquidation proceedings of MG Global Inc.

Previous Work

Immediately prior to joining Arent Fox, George served as the law clerk for the Honorable Mary F. Walrath, US Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Delaware (September 2008 – September 2009), where he gained experience working on some of the largest bankruptcy cases filed under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code (In re Buffets Holdings, Inc., In re Magna Entertainment Corp., In re Ritz Camera Centers, Inc., In re Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc., In re Eddie Bauer Holdings, Inc., In re Flying J, Inc., and others).

While attending law school, George interned for the Honorable Melanie L. Cyganowski, Chief Judge, US Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of New York, and, as part of his LL.M. in Bankruptcy training, participated in researching and drafting the Supreme Court Amicus Brief in support of Respondent in Travelers Casualty & Surety Co. v. Pacific Gas & Electric Co., 549 U.S. 443 (2007).
