Melanie Joo focuses her practice on commercial litigation, class actions, administrative proceedings, government investigations, and appellate proceedings. She also advises clients on regulatory matters relating to advertising, sales practices, franchising and licensing. Melanie is an associate in Arent Fox’s Automotive Industry Practice Group, and her broad-based experience enables her to help business clients in various industries with complex litigation, regulatory, and business matters.

Client Work

Melanie’s representative work includes:

  • Leading the regulatory mapping effort for federal and 50-state sales, licensing, and marketing practices for national brands and dealer groups.
  • Defending multi-plaintiff collective employment and consumer actions.

  • Defending multiple agency government investigations

Previous Work

Prior to joining Arent Fox, Melanie was an associate in the Los Angeles office of a national law firm, where she led the group’s Regulatory/Compliance Team. The Regulatory/Compliance team was responsible for conducting federal/state regulatory reviews of advertising, finance, and franchise laws for auto dealerships, dealer associations, and advertising agencies.

Professional Activities

She is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the International Association of Korean Lawyers, and the Korean American Chamber of Commerce Los Angeles.

Publications, Presentations and Recognitions

In 2011 the Automotive Industry Practice Group was selected as one of the Top 5 Practices in California by the Daily Journal.

  • Melanie has provided litigation perspective in presentations on bankruptcy-related topics, including the Nuts and Bolts of Business Chapter 11 (December 2010) and the Workings of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy for Debtors and Creditors (January 2011).
  • Melanie was recently featured and interviewed by The Korea Times Los Angeles (November 30, 2010 publication) where she discussed business chapter 11s and the Korean American business community’s “misperceptions” of Chapter 11s in the United States.
