Prior to joining Arent Fox, Eli externed with Judge Jeffrey Howard of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He had a second externship with Judge Ronald Guzman of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Eli also worked as an examiner for the US Patent and Trademark Office.
