Matthew Pace, a partner in the New York office, has more than 20 years of professional experience working for and representing some of the biggest names in the sports industry. Matthew brings hands-on industry experience to the table and focuses on a broad range of sports business matters, including team acquisitions and sales, sponsorships, licensing and promotional agreements, joint venture activities, digital rights, and other sports media issues.

Client Work

Matthew represents sports leagues and teams, sponsors and properties, sports technology companies, investors, licensees and licensors, and sports marketing and promotions agencies. His clients have included Garmin Cervelo Pro Cycling Team; Legend 10, LLC; Ultimate Fighting Championship; Northern Lights Hockey; New York Jets; New York Cosmos; Sports Technologies, LLC; NYSE Euronext; Northeast Sports Consultants; Branded Retail Energy Company; Kaleidoscope Sports and Entertainment; and Palm Beach International Raceway.

Representations handled by Matthew include:

  • NY Cosmos in the relaunch of the NY Cosmos Soccer Club and all related business opportunities
  • NYSE Euronext, Inc. in connection with an endorsement deal with PGA Tour golfer Steve Stricker
  • Northern Lights Hockey, LLC in the formation of Northern Lights and acquisition of the Dubuque Fighting Saints
  • Zuffa, LLC, dba Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in connection with fighter promotional agreements and certain television contracts
  • Sports Technologies in its first licensing deal with Sports Illustrated which resulted in the purchase of FanNation.com by Sports Illustrated and the formation of a joint venture between Sports Technologies, Sports Illustrated, and Time Inc. Interactive
  • Northeast Sports Consultants in their agreement with ESPN
  • Slipstream Sports in connection with various matters including sponsorship agreements for the Garmin Cervelo Pro Tour team
  • Branded Retail Energy Company in connection with a first-of-its-kind branded energy sponsorship with University of Texas, Texas A&M University, University of Illinois, Baylor University, and Southern Methodist University

Previous Work

Prior to joining Arent Fox, Matthew was the executive director of Major League Lacrosse; the executive vice president of Business Development and general counsel for GM EventWorks, a company responsible for managing the sports and entertainment alliances for General Motors; a player agent and a business development and partnership consultant to national retailers and marketing companies as well as counsel at a New York law firm.

Professional Activities

Matthew serves as co-chair of the sports section of the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law (EASL) section of the New York State Bar Association.
