Michael Scarpati, Ph.D.

Michael is experienced in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications for inventions directed to molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

Michael works on numerous transactional matters and due diligence matters with experience drafting patent invalidity, non-infringement and freedom to operate opinions, conducting prior art searches, and estimating the value of intellectual property. He has also assisted with litigation related to patent and trademark infringement actions, as well as USPTO post grant revocation proceedings such as inter partes reexaminations.

Michael’s client work focuses on application drafting and patent prosecution in the areas of biotechnology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

Previous Work

Michael received his Bachelor of Sciences in Economics and Biology from Baruch College in 2005, followed by a Master of Sciences in Biology from Hunter College in 2007. After receiving that degree, he remained at Hunter College as a Ph.D. student in the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology subprogram. Michael obtained a leave of absence from the program from 2010-2012 to attend law school, receiving his Juris Doctor from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 2012. Thereafter, he returned to the Ph.D. program and was advanced to candidacy in 2013, with the doctorate expected in 2017. In 2015 Michael received a Bachelor of Sciences in Computer Science from the University of Illinois.

Michael has extensive hands-on experience with biotechnology, with over a decade of experience working at the lab bench in college and private laboratories. His research interests include all aspects of molecular biology, with a particular focus on structural biology and signal transduction. To that end, he is familiar with both standard wet lab techniques and bioinformatics-based approaches.
