New International Trade Partner Timothy Feighery Featured in Global Arbitration Review

    March 4, 2013

International Trade partner Timothy Feighery was profiled in Global Arbitration Review after he joined the firm in February. Mr. Feighery was previously appointed by President Obama to serve as Chairman of the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the United States (FCSC), a quasi-judicial, independent agency within the Justice Department that adjudicates the claims of US nationals against foreign governments. His practice at Arent Fox will concentrate on international arbitration, dispute resolutions, and post-conflict claims work.

“Partner Pierre-Richard Prosper is building on the firm’s international arbitration practice with some new and exciting cases,” Mr. Feighery told GAR. “Those matters combined with the expertise and client base of the firm’s international trade and international transactions groups present many opportunities to expand our work.”

Prior to his FCSC appointment, Mr. Feighery was an Attorney-adviser at the State Department, where he defended US interests in international arbitration and foreign investment disputes. He managed the two largest claims brought by Iran before the Iran/US Claims Tribunal, established as part of the Algiers Accords that resolved the 1979 hostage crisis. Before working at the State Department, he served as Chief of Section of the Legal Services Branch of the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva — the agency that addressed claims arising out of Iraq’s 1990 invasion and occupation of Kuwait. From 2003 to 2004, Mr. Feighery was a deputy Special Master for the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund of 2001, where he was responsible for assessing compensation claims by victims of the 9/11 attacks.

In addition to Mr. Feighery, GAR reported Arent Fox boasts two other well-known arbitration practitioners in partner Pierre-Richard Prosper and counsel Maidie E. Oliveau. Mr. Prosper “is a former war crimes prosecutor for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues who joined Arent Fox in 2007,” while Ms. Oliveau “Oliveau was one of 12 arbitrators appointed to the ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport formed to hear disputes during the Olympic Games in London in 2012.”
