Arent Fox Earns Perfect Score in 2010 Corporate Equality Index
WASHINGTON, DC – SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 – For the second consecutive year, Arent Fox LLP has earned the top rating of 100 percent in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI). Arent Fox is one of 88 law firms in the United States to achieve a perfect score in the 2010 CEI, earning top marks for their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees.
“Arent Fox’s commitment to diversity goes to the very heart of our firm’s strength and success,” said Marc Fleischaker, chairman of the Washington, DC-based law firm. “We are extremely gratified that Arent Fox’s efforts to create and maintain an inclusive environment for its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members have again resulted in a perfect rating of 100 percent in the HRC Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index.”
Fleischaker said he is particularly proud that, according to the survey, the legal profession eclipses every other industry in providing vital benefits and protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees. The number of firms – 88 in all – achieving the top score reflect a steady increase over past reports. In 2006, the first year law firms were invited to participate, 12 firms achieved a 100 percent rating. Perfect scores were achieved by 30 firms in 2007 and 64 firms in 2008. A total of 305 major US businesses earned the top rating of 100 percent.
“For major law firms and their clients, inclusive and fair practices for LGBT attorneys and staff have increasingly become the norm,” said Robert Falk, the HRC Foundation’s General Counsel. “Top law firms are aware that providing equal benefits and protections to their LGBT employees translates into a positive work environment and the ability to recruit the best lawyers. Moreover, in-house counsel routinely tell us that they look at the CEI law firm ratings when evaluating firms under consideration for their business.”
The CEI rated 590 businesses in total, evaluating LGBT-related policies and practices including non-discrimination policies, transgender health benefits and domestic partner benefits. Arent Fox’s efforts in ensuring LGBT equality in each of the survey’s main criterion earned it the prestigious 100 percent ranking.
