Arent Fox Names Mark M. Katz as New Chairman
Washington, DC — March 9, 2010 — Arent Fox LLP today announced that the firm’s Executive Committee has unanimously approved the appointment of Mark M. Katz as chairman of the firm. He succeeds Marc L. Fleischaker, who stepped down after 14 years in that post. Mr. Katz’s appointment was effective March 1.
“It is a great privilege to be selected chairman of the firm, and I thank the Executive Committee for their vote of confidence,” said Mr. Katz. “Marc Fleischaker has done a remarkable job as chairman. During Marc’s tenure, we expanded our office in New York and opened our Los Angeles office, both of which are thriving and have contributed enormously to our expanded national presence. Marc also successfully navigated Arent Fox through difficult periods, helping the firm maintain financial stability and profitability during the worst financial crisis to strike our nation in a generation. Marc embodies the very best of Arent Fox, working countless hours on behalf of the firm, often at great personal sacrifice. We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for the leadership he has provided over the past 14 years.”
Mr. Katz is one of the most highly regarded real estate attorneys in the United States. Before assuming the chairmanship, he was the co-chair of Arent Fox’s business department. His principal areas of focus are commercial real estate matters, joint ventures, transactional work and finance, including distressed real estate investing. Among other national clients, he represents the Whitehall Street Real Estate Funds, sponsored by Goldman, Sachs & Co. since their inception in 1991, as well as the J.E. Robert Companies, Marathon Real Estate Opportunity Funds, JBG Companies, LLC and the Tampa Bay Rays Major League Baseball team. In 2009, Chambers USA recognized Mark as a leading real estate lawyer in Washington, DC. He is also a member of the Urban Land Institute. Mr. Katz intends to continue his day to day practice and serve clients in addition to his new management responsibilities.
Mr. Katz is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. Immediately following graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Murray M. Schwartz, United States District Judge for the District of Delaware, and for the Honorable Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr., United States Circuit Judge for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Katz earned his BA degree from Oberlin College.
Mr. Fleischaker will remain at Arent Fox to practice law full time and continue to serve on the firm’s Executive Committee. In honor of Marc’s long and successful tenure as chairman, the firm has named him Chair Emeritus of Arent Fox. “Arent Fox is a wonderful place to practice law. It has been a privilege to serve as Chair of our Executive Committee and I look forward to supporting Mark in his new role,” Mr. Fleischaker said. “This transition will be seamless, and I am now excited by the prospect of a full time practice.”
Mr. Fleischaker’s legal practice focuses in a number of areas, including trade association representation, environmental law, antitrust law, litigation, and civil rights law. He chairs the Nonprofit Initiative at Arent Fox, which has one of the largest practices in the country representing trade associations, museums, foundations and other nonprofit organizations. Mr. Fleischaker serves as counsel to ten national trade associations and foundations in the fields of automotive parts, grain, forest products, higher education and credit counseling.
