Arent Fox, Washington Lawyers’ Committee, DC Public Schools To Hold 7th Annual GeoPlunge Geography Tournament At Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
WASHINGTON, DC – A record 270 DC public school students are expected to compete in the 7th city-wide GeoPlunge Geography Tournament organized by Arent Fox LLP, the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and the DC Public Schools, at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 9:00 am–2:45 pm. The Gallery is located at Eighth and F Streets NW, Washington, DC.
This year's GeoPlunge Geography Tournament features 90 three-person teams of 4th, 5th and 6th graders from 45 DC elementary and middle schools competing for the prized GeoPlunge Cup along with many other trophies and awards. Dozens of local law firms, businesses, and individuals are sponsoring the participating schools and many of the sponsors are also acting as coaches for the teams.
Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray has officially proclaimed November 15 “GeoPlunge Day.”
GeoPlunge is an award-winning series of educational geography games invented by Alan Fishel, a partner at Arent Fox LLP. The games are played with a set of cards representing the 50 states. Tournaments include three different GeoPlunge card games that teach geography in a fun-filled competition that encourages students to learn facts about the states, including state capitals, border states, large cities, time zones, and state rankings in size, population and entrance into the United States.
Each year, the annual GeoPlunge Tournament draws rave reviews from student players, teachers, principals and sponsors. DC Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson, who is expected to attend a portion of this year's tournament and preside over the awards ceremony, remarked that the GeoPlunge Tournament is "incredible to see" and that "this opportunity is huge for our students."
