Derrick began his career in intellectual property after graduate school at the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). As a patent examiner, he examined in the art technologies of facsimile and image processing and medical devices. After a couple of years at the PTO, he then went on to work for an IP boutique firm where he prepared and prosecuted patent applications related to optical communications, telecommunications, and computer software technologies. He also worked at a large IP litigation firm where he engaged in patent prosecution and litigation support. Prior to his career in IP, Derrick worked as an electrical engineer for Dow Chemical, AT&T, and Jacobs Engineering.
