Passengers Get the Green Light
Will we be hailing driverless cars sooner rather than later? California regulators have allowed self-driving cars to pick up ride-share passengers for the first time in the Golden State.
The California Public Utilities Commission approved the establishment of two pilot programs paving the way for the use of self-driving cars for passenger pickups. One pilot program allows companies to provide rides to members of the public using self-driving or autonomous vehicles so long as there is a trained human driver in the car. The other pilot program will allow passenger pickups with self-driving cars without a trained human driver in the car, but the vehicle must be remotely monitored and operated. However, program participants will be unable to charge passengers for the rides until further CPUC approval. So free driverless rides for everyone!
