California Real Estate Legislation To Watch In 2018

Senior Associate Frank Petrilli was recently featured by Law360 in an article about the new California laws effective in 2018 and how they will affect affordable housing and the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA.

One such law, S.B. 35, allows in some instances for cities to bypass local review, speeding up the entitlement process for affordable housing projects. Frank indicated that cities may not have the staff resources to take advantage of the program, noting that the law “would in theory create a more streamlined CEQA exemption process, although it’s unclear as to whether or not cities are actually going to avail themselves of that.” Frank also advised that California should expect a renewed focus on affordable housing legislation in 2018, which has already begun to materialize with several bills having been introduced in the last two weeks.
