Our Statement on the Derek Chauvin Verdict

Over the past few weeks, this country has watched and relived the traumatic, public death of George Floyd. Today’s much-anticipated verdict – holding Derek Chauvin guilty on all charges – was a step towards healing.

This country has a long history of failing to hold law enforcement accountable for the killing of unarmed Black people. While this is a good day for justice, it is also a somber moment for our country and in particular for members of the Black community. There is no happy ending here as even this verdict cannot bring George Floyd back.

The murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed served as a catalyst for the start of the Arent Fox Center for Racial Equality. As a law firm, we continue to recognize that we have a central role to play in the process of reconciliation and the push to reform policies that may have emboldened Chauvin to murder.

We express our deepest sympathy and support for the family of George Floyd, but know there is a lot of work to be done. To volunteer to help the Center and continue the work of ending police brutality and supporting those who are victimized, please click here.
