Scooter Libby Prosecutor Calls Pardon a Loyalty Message

Arent Fox Partner Peter Zeidenberg responded to President Donald Trump’s pardon of the chief of staff to former Vice President Dick Cheney during an interview on Yahoo News’ Skullduggery podcast, saying the move sends a message to potential witnesses in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

“I don’t see any other logic to it,” said Peter, who served as Deputy Special Counsel in the government’s case again Libby. In 2007, Libby was convicted of obstruction of justice following the 2003 leak of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity. Then-President George W. Bush commuted Libby’s 30-month prison sentence.

“He already had his law license back,” Peter said. “It’s not a case, if you thought he was treated unjustly, that the poor guy is rotting in jail and is gonna die in prison. I mean, this isn’t a situation like that.”
