Richard Newman Receives Award from the American Institute of Architects Foundation

WASHINGTON, DC - On December 9, the American Institute of Architects Foundation honored Real Estate partner Richard A. Newman for his tenure as a member of its Board of Directors and as a Foundation Officer the last five years. Mr. Newman was also recognized as the Foundation’s first and only non-architect Board member.

Mr. Newman has served as a Board member and officer of AIAF during a period of transition where the Foundation undertook a number of initiatives. That work included taking control and ownership of the Octagon House – and beginning a major fundraising and renovation project intended to stabilize the historic venue where the Treaty of Ghent (ending the War of 1812) was signed; a scholarship program to help disadvantaged youth attend college programs leading to a degree in architecture; and developing, in collaboration with the Clinton Foundation, a major program on sustainability. Mr. Newman acted as lead counsel on many of these initiatives, while continue to serve as outside counsel to the AIA as well on various real estate, finance, and tax matters.

As co-chair of Arent Fox’s Public Finance group, Mr. Newman provides services as borrower’s counsel, underwriter’s counsel, credit enhancement counsel, trustee’s counsel, servicer/originator counsel, and bond counsel to clients across the country. He also represents clients in all phases of real estate acquisition, development, financing, leasing and disposition, as well as nonprofit and for-profit organizations in federal and local tax matters, including Tax Increment Financings, Special Tax District financings, real estate tax matters, and exempt organization taxation.
