Arent Fox Receives an Education Outstanding Achievement Award from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee
Washington, DC — Earlier today, Arent Fox LLP received the Education Outstanding Achievement Award at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee’s 45th Anniversary Wiley A. Branton Awards Luncheon for work the firm does with the DC Public School System, and, in particular, for its lead role running the annual GeoPlunge Challenge Tournament, which is based on the award-winning educational game created by Communications, Technology & Mobile partner Alan Fishel. This is the fourth time in eight years that Arent Fox and its attorneys have received a prestigious education award from the Washington Lawyers' Committee in connection with the firm’s work with GeoPlunge.
The annual GeoPlunge Challenge Tournament involves hundreds of 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children and is organized by Arent Fox in partnership with the DC Public School System, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee, and the Smithsonian. In recognition of the tournament’s significance, Mayor Vincent Gray commemorated January 9 as “GeoPlunge Day” in DC. The Chancellor of the DC public school system, who presides over the awards ceremony each year, has stated that the GeoPlunge Tournament is “incredible to see” and provides an “opportunity that is huge for our students”. Each of the hundreds of survey results from the students who participated in the past tournament were positive, including one student who said “GeoPlunge is a fun…way to learn American Geography. Before I was not so good, now I’m great!” More than 30 people from Arent Fox helped run this past tournament, including the following individuals who took a lead role in ensuring the tournament’s success: Alan Fishel, Keisha Garrick, Emily Johnston, Ngoc Niblack, Eva Pulliam, and Amy Salomon.
The Washington Lawyers’ Committee’s 45th Anniversary Wiley A. Branton Awards Luncheon hosted approximately 1,000 attendees from law firms, corporations, government, civil rights groups, and other nonprofit organizations at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC.
