Santos Quoted on CBP's Impact on De Minimis Shipments and Contraband Detection

Customs & Import Compliance Practice Leader Angela Santos was quoted by Law360 discussing the impact of US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) recent bulletin notifying the importing community that it will notify entry filers if they use vague and non-compliant cargo descriptions. Going forward, entry filers that are notified must correct this issue.
Angela explained that with the heightened scrutiny faced by de minimis imports valued at $800 that enter the country duty free and without the formal entry process, this process may be intended to help the government better detect potential contraband.
"This change is largely to help the government identify what goods are entering the country and better target for further examination or enforcement," she added.
