For all the talk of the road to autonomous vehicles being paved with certainty, some big names in the industry are being asked if they have placed the right bets. General Motors, Ford, and Tesla are among many companies that are faced with tough questions from investors who would like a more firm timeline on their ROI. The dirty secret: "It’s actually a lot harder than everybody thought," said Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst for Chicago-based Navigant Research. "And it’s going to take considerably longer for this technology to get really widespread." As a result, pencils are being sharpened and belts are being tightened as long term goals give way to near-term budget constraints.
